Application for the grant or renewal of a firearm and/or shotgun certificate

What you need to complete this form

This application process is for occupants living in Dorset. If you currently live in another Police force area, please apply via their website.

  • If a Renewal - A full copy of your current certificate(s), including table one and two
  • Your contact details including: email address, phone number, work contact details (if not unemployed or retired), previous addresses if you haven't lived at your current address for more than five years
  • Details of any relevant conditions you have which need to be disclosed (you'll find a list of those in the guidance notes). Your GP or practice address, postcode and phone number. Previous GP or practice information if you haven’t been registered with your current GP or practice for ten years or more. If, during the last ten years, there have been times when you haven’t been registered with a GP or practice in the UK, we’ll need to know about this and will ask why this was and if there is any information you can give us about this, for example if you're in the armed services and were posted abroad
  • Details about any offences or written cautions (including speeding but not parking offences or fixed penalty notices). Details of the offence, including the date (month and year)
  • If a Renewal – Details about the Shotguns / Firearms and any ammunition you own: Security arrangements – how and where the Shotguns / Firearms and ammunition will be stored, whether the arrangements are shared (and, it they are, the full details of who they are shared with)
  • If a Grant - Details about the Shotguns / Firearms and ammunition you intend to acquire: calibre, type and the reason for having them. The calibre and quantity of ammunition, whether the arrangements are shared (and, it they are, the full details of who they are shared with)
  • Land or Club details (Firearm)
  • The details of the referee/s you've known for more than two years, including: (Shotguns = 1 referee / Firearms = 2 referees) Their date and place of birth, their occupation, contact details. Referees cannot be a member of your family, a serving police officer or staff, or a registered firearms dealer. They must also be over 18 years of age.
  • One passport-style photo which is no larger than 1MB in size and is a .jpg/.jpeg
  • Credit or debit card details to make your online payment

What happens after you submit this form

We will get in touch as quickly as possible if we have any questions about your application or need to ask for more information.

Once we have received your completed GP letter, we will progress your application appropriately. Your GP is requested to return the completed GP letter directly to the administration unit. Upon receipt of your completed GP letter a Firearms Licensing Officer will be in contact regarding the next stage of your application.

In the unlikely event your GP should return the letter to yourself, please forward the completed letter to: FELU@Dorset.police.uk

If you have not yet sent the GP letter to your current GP surgery, please download the letter from the link below and post to your GP surgery without delay as your application will be kept as ‘Pending’ until a completed GP letter has been received.

  • £88.00 - Firearm certificate grant
  • £90.00 - Shotgun and Firearm certificate grant
  • £90:00 - Shotgun certificate grant and Firearm certificate renewal
  • £90.00 - Shotgun certificate renewal and Firearm certificate grant

How do we use this information

This service stores the information you provide as you progress through the form. Form submissions for this service that are not fully completed are automatically deleted after 30 days. If you contact us about a failed online submission, with your consent, we may retrieve your incomplete submission if it is still available to us. At our discretion, we may also review and process incomplete submissions where there is a threat to life, injury or vulnerability identified within the incomplete submission.

Once your form is submitted and processed, the information is retained for 7 days by this service while the information is transferred securely to the relevant force information systems.
